SBH15 Amorphous-Alloy Oil-Immersed Transformer

The SBH15 oil-immersed transformer replaces silicon-steel laminations with a core wound from amorphous alloy strip, cutting no-load loss by around 70% against an S9 transformer; it serves rural and urban distribution networks.

Product overview

Core wound from amorphous alloy strip, with no-load loss about 70% below an S9 transformer, a copper-foil LV winding and Dyn11 vector group.

Product details

  • The core is wound from amorphous alloy strip, giving about 70% lower no-load loss than an S9 transformer.
  • The LV winding uses copper foil, which improves short-circuit withstand.
  • The Dyn11 vector group limits the harmonics fed back into the network and improves supply quality.
  • Vacuum oil filling removes air bubbles from the windings and keeps insulation performance stable.

The amorphous alloy material

An amorphous-alloy transformer works exactly like a conventional fully sealed distribution transformer; the difference is the core material. Amorphous alloy has outstanding magnetic permeability: produced by rapid quenching, its metal atoms take a disordered, non-crystalline arrangement — quite unlike the crystal structure of silicon steel — which makes the material easier to magnetise and demagnetise. Its base elements are iron, nickel, cobalt, boron and carbon. It is an isotropic soft magnetic material with low magnetising power and no structural defects to impede domain-wall motion; it is very thin, so the stacking factor is lower, its resistivity is 3–6 times and its hardness 5 times that of silicon steel, and it is particularly sensitive to mechanical stress.

Where it is used

The SBH15 is used mainly in rural and urban distribution networks, and in commercial buildings, high-rise developments, airports, industrial plants, power stations, oil platforms, metro lines and tunnels — critical sites and sites with special fire-protection requirements. It can also be combined with LV switchgear to form a box-type substation.
